Stop Surviving and Start Living

“Open your eyes, look within.
Are you satisfied with the life you are living?”
Bob Marley

There are two major types of humans. One of them frequently says, “From here on, I’m going to live my life”. Other says “I’m just surviving my life” (with a sigh). What’s the big difference? We all live through this game of life. But, what’s the margin that decides whether we are living our surviving?

To put in simple words, people who feel happy and content with their life in spite of all the worries and pains, and seizes each moment are people who live.  Survivors are the people who just spend their time on this earth by just thinking and worrying about the things that happened, things that are going to happen and things that are happening.

Of course, we all face tough times. All of us are down and depressed at some point in our lives. It’s totally pointless to live a life dreading the fears and increasing the anxiety within ourselves. We’re all going to get buried someday. But, what’s the purpose of this life? We tend to run away from things that hurt us. Like a baby who stops to touch a boiling pot after getting burnt once, we are trying to keep ourselves away from the things that may hurt us or make us feel low. Ultimately, we deny taking risks.

Those who survive, feel satisfied with what they have. They don’t have the charisma to learn new things. A paycheck, a home, and meal for three times a day can easily satisfy a merely surviving person. They just want to escape the painful ropes of life. Indeed, they escape. Whereas, people who live their lives are a class apart. Their attitude and perspective of life are completely different and obviously unique. No matter how many times they are hurt or depressed, they feel optimistic.Yes, People who “live” their lives are optimistic. They may work for 12 hours a day, but these people tend to find some amount time for themselves.

“If you do what you need, you are surviving.
If you do what you want, you are living.”
-unknown

The irony is, a pessimistic person (or, the people who survive) loses sleep due to his/her anxiety and worries.
An optimistic (or, the people who live) and a content person lose sleep due to his/her incessant thirst to achieve something big irrespective of their worries.

Take a moment to think this. (no, take as much time as you need)
“Are you really satisfied with your life?”
If the answer is yes. I take a bow.
If it’s a no. It’s not too late to get back on track!

Each person has a dream. If not a dream, at least a positive desire. Think of what’s making you compromise your desires and dreams. Human beings on earth are destined with beautiful talents that make each and every one of them stand unique. It may take some
amount of time to discover our talents and desires.

The road to success is not smooth. We need to ride through few bumps, get some dents and finally reach our destination. The real competition starts when we reach our destination.

There is this beautiful quote which inspires me a lot.

“Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over,
she became a butterfly.”
Barbara Haines Howett, Ladies of the Borobudur

No matter what happens, get up and start marching forward. Start living your life, rather than just surviving. People may hurt you, dust it off and rise again. You may get physically and mentally tired. Never give up and be content.

It’s not too late to start living your life. It all depends on our perspective. Make maximum use of this one single life we are gifted with. Always think about how you could improve yourself. A teacher of mine told me this when I was a kid. These lines are now stitched to my heart.

“Each night before you sleep, think this…
Have you advanced at least one step towards achieving your dreams?
If yes… then close your eyes and sleep.
If not, get back to work.”

Don’t close the gates of your hearts with what you have in your hand right now. Never cease to explore this beautiful world and its teachings. A moment will arrive and the universe will welcome you into a new life.

From that moment… you’ll start living your life and stay happy forever.

Peace and Love
Mukil.
